Alfred E. Bush

Dubbing Dubya
Handing out nicknames to pols and journalists is one of the one endearing trait of our feckless leader. But the names we've heard about aren't the ones used in private.

F THERE IS ONE CULTURAL CONTRIBUTION to result from the advent of the Bush administration over these last two glorious years, it may be the proliferation of fun and clever nicknames flying back and forth across the nation's capital.

Naturally perhaps, it is the President (or Resident) himself that has garnered more terms of endearment from the media, particularly the independent media, than anyone else. Among the more ubiquitous of them... Smirk, Shrub, Bush Lite, Boy George, Chimp in Chief, Incurious George (see sidebar), and Commander in Thief.

Ape Person of the YearIt is a well publicized fact that George W. has a penchant for bestowing special names on certain significant personalities both within the beltway and beyond. For example, Kenneth Lay was called "Kenny Boy", Rep. Barney Frank is "Saber Tooth", former President Bush is "41", Defense Sec. Donald Rumsfeld is known as "Rummy", Karl Rove is the "Boy Genius", Barbara Bush = "No. 1", just to name a few. To be christened in this way by the world's most powerful man is understandably considered an honor of sorts.

It is a lesser known fact is that there is a rather extensive alternate list of nicknames used privately within the walls of the oval office. Skreed managed to obtain a copy of this list (with thanks to www.whitehouse.org) and reprints it here.

Curious George

CURIOUS GEORGE is a cartoon monkey that lives with the man with a yellow hat and is always curious. His curiosity always leads him into tons of trouble. The little monkey with a lot of curiosity did everything children were tempted to do - riding through the city on top of a bus and getting tangled in a giant pot of spaghetti. Luckily his friend, the man in the yellow hat, was there to help him out of these situations. Even though being curious got George in a lot of trouble, he always made friends along the way.

INCURIOUS GEORGE, by comparison, is not curious at all and that gets him into trouble. He works with a man who wears a pacemaker and who helps him out of sticky situations. Along the way, he makes enemies around the world.
